How to Study for Finals in One Week: A Day by Day Plan

One week is enough to prepare for finals if you spend it testing yourself instead of rereading. Start with the topics you know least, practice them until they stick, and keep the last day for a light review and sleep.

The plan below assumes three or four exams in the same week. If you have fewer, give each one more of the time.

Day 1: List every topic and sort them

Open the syllabus or review sheet for each class and write down every topic the exam covers. Next to each one, mark it green if you could explain it to a friend right now, yellow if you half remember it, and red if you have no idea.

Then put your exams on a calendar with the date and time of each. The order you study in comes from that list: red topics in the earliest exam go first.

Day 2: Make one study guide per class

A study guide is a single document with every topic, the definitions you need and an example of each kind of problem. Build it from your notes, slides and the review sheet, and give the red topics the most space.

Do not try to make it pretty. A guide you finish today and use all week beats a beautiful one you finish on Thursday.

Days 3 and 4: Test yourself on the red and yellow topics

Rereading feels productive but mostly tells you that the page looks familiar. Testing yourself shows what you can actually recall, which is what the exam asks for.

For each red and yellow topic, turn the key facts into flashcards and the problem types into practice questions. Answer them without looking, check, and come back to the ones you missed later the same day.

Day 5: Take a full practice exam

Pick your hardest class and sit a practice exam in one go, timed, with your notes closed. Old exams from the professor are ideal. A quiz you build from your study guide works too.

Mark every question you got wrong or guessed on. Those are the topics for tomorrow.

Day 6: Fix the gaps

Go back to the guide for each topic you missed and work one more example of it. Then test yourself on it again. Repeat the practice exam for any class you have not done one for yet.

Day 7: Review lightly and sleep

The day before an exam is for a last pass over your study guide and the flashcards you still miss, not for new material. Stop early enough to get a full night of sleep.
